The hallway, staircase, and landing are the very first things people see when they walk into your home, but they are often the hardest areas to modernise. We recently completed a complete transformation project in Wallington, Surrey, that perfectly shows how professional preparation and painting can turn a dark, dated space into a bright, modern entrance.

Here is a breakdown of how we took this property from tired and dark to completely unrecognizable:

Phase 1: Ripping Out and Prepping the Staircase

When we arrived, the entire staircase was dominated by heavy, dated brown varnished woodwork, which isn't a bad thing, it actually fitted in well with the age of the property. Most painters, like myself, love to restore original timber. everything about this property was just "wow" in your mind you just think, restore and preserve.

Here is a breakdown of how we took this property from tired and dark to completely unrecognizable:

• The Strip-Down: Our first job was to pull up the old carpet completely to expose the bare timber treads and risers beneath.
• The preparation: Painting over old varnish requires intense prep. We thoroughly sanded down all the balustrades, handrails, and skirtings, then filled all the old carpet tack holes and imperfections to ensure a completely smooth surface for our primer.

Phase 2: Painting Fresh Plaster (The Mist Coat)

The homeowners had the walls and ceilings completely re-plastered before we started. Fresh plaster acts like a giant sponge; if you apply standard trade paint straight onto it, the dry plaster will suck the moisture out instantly, causing the paint to peel and flake off later.

• The Fix: We applied a proper "mist coat" - a specially diluted layer of matt emulsion that sinks into the fresh plaster to seal it. Once this primer layer cured, we followed up with two topcoats of premium, durable wall paint to give a flawless, durable finish.

Phase 3: The Woodwork Transformation

To completely banish the dark brown theme, we primed all the prepped woodwork with Zinsser B.I.N and applied multiple coats of undercoat, followed by white eggshell paint. Changing the woodwork from dark brown to bright white instantly doubled the amount of natural light bouncing around the landing and staircase.

Finishing with a Modern Stair Runner

Instead of laying standard wall-to-wall carpet back down, the homeowners finished the staircase with a modern stair runner down the center of the steps. This left the freshly painted white timber exposed on the edges of the stairs, creating a premium contrast that looks straight out of an interior design magazine.
